Here are the clues: They are a highly regarded program. They are a perennial bowl team. Their head coach who is still highly regarded and was once considered part of ‘new
breed” of coaching elite. They are on TV all the time, particularly in conference play. They were projected by preseason magazines to be a top five team three years ago, a top 20
team last year, and a top 35 team this year. They are 4-12 against the pointspread in their last 16 regular season games. They are 0-7 straight up in their last seven
conference games, in a fading conference. They are 4-10 straight up the last 14 times they’ve taken the field, even with a soft non-conference schedule leading into play in a mediocre
conference. Two of the four straight up wins came over Northern Illinois, another came against Syracuse. Have you got it yet? Some of you may have guessed right fairly quickly. Some others may not have gotten it until the mention of the wins over Northern Illinois and Syracuse. If you’re
STILL not certain, we’ll end the suspense. It’s the IOWA HAWKEYES. Last Saturday’s 38-20 loss at home to Indiana in a revenge spot was just the latest episode of underachievement from Kirk Frerentz’s team. They’re supposed to be an annual
contender in the Big Ten. Yet, they’ve lost seven straight conference games heading into this Saturday’s contest at Penn State. They’re supposed to be a marquee program that
frequents the national rankings. Yet, the team is just 15-15 its last 30 games in spite of playing what would have to be characterized as a fairly weak schedule. Whatever magic Kirk Frerentz brought to the program seems to have worn off. It’s scary to think what would be happening if Iowa played in a better conference, or gave themselves a tougher
non-league slate. We’re talking about a team that lost to lowly Iowa State this year, lowly Northwestern last year, and has gone 0-2 against inconsistent Indiana. When will the media hold this program up to some standards?! Things could get worse for the Hawkeyes in the coming weeks. They’ve got that tough battle Saturday against the Nittany Lions, followed by three improving opponents in Illinois, Purdue,
and Michigan State. They caught an enormous break this year in missing both Ohio State and Michigan on the schedule (a combined 58-23 loss last year), but they still may not be able to take
advantage! Be sure you’ve got this team in the right spot in your power ratings. They missed the spread by 29 and 19 the last two times they were favored. We mentioned in our clues that the Hawkeyes
are 4-12 ATS the last 16 regular season games. The nation is slowly realizing what stat handicappers noticed long ago. Iowa isn’t who you think they are!
