Shark Attack: Is Sunday Night Football Overwhelming Sportsbooks?

For years, Monday Night Football games tended to go over the total, having more scoring than the linemaker and betting public expected.  It was the one game of the week that "everyone" was watching.  All the players and coaches from throughout the league watched MNF and coaches schemed for big plays on both offense and defense for players only too eager to show off before their peers.   Maybe it has something to do with the presence of Madden and Michaels in the booth.

You probably heard that NBC paid extra money to the NFL to implement "flex scheduling" that allows them to move certain games to Sunday nights for national coverage. Conspiracy theorists might be thinking that the extra money also paid for extra scoring.

The last three Sunday night games have seen 58, 62, and 66 points.  These high scores are occurring at a time when scoring is plummeting around the league. The last three Sunday night games are 3-0 to the Over. All other NFL games the past three weeks are 9-21 to the Under. That's 70% Unders for games not played on NBC.

Be aware that those TV affairs may be warping your perceptions about the NFL right now. If you're betting a lot of Overs on Sunday afternoons, you're swimming upstream. Shootouts are the exception, not the rule.  But if you're looking for a slowly played Sunday Night game, you may be waiting for a while.
