Are the Denver Broncos acting rashly by benching Jake Plummer in favor of highly touted rookie Jay Cutler? The stats say no. He's compiled a quarterback rating of 70.5 through 11 games. That ranks 27th in the league, in the neighborhood of guys like Matt Leinart, Bruce Gradkowski, Joey Harrington, and Mike Vick. You'll note that none of those guys are playing for playoff contenders. P

lummer's got a career mark of 74.7 with 136 career starts. Those are the kind of numbers that a guy might be expected to have in his rookie year. And those stats are built over enough time to know whether somebody is going to be a star or not.

The Broncos were able to hide Plummer's weaknesses the past few years with a strong running game and a conservative attack. In big games that mattered, Plummer consistently fell short. You'll recall that Denver needed a bunch of turnovers and friendly calls from officials to beat New England in the playoffs last year ... before losing to Pittsburgh in the next round.

Denver could have made the playoffs with Plummer. They weren't likely to win in the playoffs. Moving to Cutler now gives the youngster a chance to get his bearings in the last five regular season games. It's a move that had to be made. Plummer's not the QB of the future any more. He's a failed experiment. Cutler's the QB of the future.
