Some of those winners paid off handsomely too. Among teams getting more than a field goal in the first half: Houston (10-3 over Jacksonville), Cleveland (14-3 over Atlanta), Tennessee (26-17 over Baltimore), NY Jets (7-6 over New England), Oakland (13-7) over Denver, Tampa Bay (7-0) over Carolina.

The handicapping media has noticed that dogs are covering ... but it's gone unreported that dogs are winning the first halves to this degree. The prior week was also a good one, with an 8-5-1 straight up in the first half for underdogs. Miami and Cleveland enjoyed big payoffs in their first half wins over Chicago and San Diego respectively.

Lines adjust quickly in this sport, and flukes happen all the time. So, there's no guarantee this potential anomaly will continue. Just remember that superior teams often play a little flat in this dead spot in the season. Nobody wants to peak in November. Playoff contenders are gearing up for the stretch run in December. That can mean less intensity than normal in the games that don't scare them. We've seen the past two weeks that the lethargy starts right out of the gate.
