Shark Attack: Could NFL 'Disaster' Be Playoff Bound?

Can the Green Bay Packers make the playoffs? That might have sounded like a ridiculous question before the season started. Their Over/Under for team victories was around six. The debate around the proposition centered on whether a 4-12 caliber team (their record last year) might do better than that because of a soft schedule.

Through nine games, the Packers sit at 4-5, and have an outside shot to grab a Wildcard. If the season ended now, the NFC Wildcards would go to teams with a 5-4 record. Green Bay will likely be favored to win four of their last seven games (versus NYJ, at San Francisco, versus Detroit and Minnesota). That would only get them to .500.

For a chance at the Wildcard, the Packers would need to upset New England at home this week (possible the way the Pats are slumping), Seattle on the road next week (possible because Seattle has virtually wrapped up its division already), or Chicago in a season finale on the road (possible because the Bears will have long wrapped up home field advantage and might rest their starters).

We're not ready to go out on any limbs ... particularly those that might snap in the frozen tundra. But we want you to keep an eye on this. The Packers themselves are playing like a team that has a chance (averaging nearly 400 yards of offense the past three weeks). That makes them a potential live dog against defenses that are saving peak intensity for other games ... and a motivated home favorite in December against teams who might not like the conditions.

Green Bay is 4-2-1 ATS the last seven games ... with the covers coming by 14, 14, 14, and 11 points. They're 4-5 straight up even though they've been underdogs in eight of their nine games. Regardless of what happens against AFC power New England this Sunday, the evidence suggests the Packers are currently very underrated by the oddsmakers and general public.
